New research finds that as women move up in the world, men benefit! The journal Demography found that men have an easier time “marrying up” than women do. Men can improve their economic well-being faster than a woman who marries up.
The research looked at adults ages 35 to 44 and found a few reasons for the shift.
There are more highly-educated women than highly-educated men in the marriage market. Basically, men have better pickings!
Second, wives’ contributions to family income have continued to increase over the years, while husbands’ have decreased.
The researchers do worry that the changes could create problems from less-educated women, and deepen the wealth gap.
